Shakya dominates pool in opening day

LALITPUR, July 16 - Nayana Shakya rewrote her own national record in 100 meters breaststroke in the individual open under the first Age Group Swimming Championship which got underway at the Birendra International Swimming Complex, Satdobato on Monday.

Shakya, who holds the national record of winning nine gold medals at the fourth National Games, sliced off more than two seconds off her previous record 1:31.59sec, touching the finish line with the timing of 1:29.63sec.

Ragina Pradhan of Malpi College finished second at 1:35.13sec while Bibidha Rimal of LRI settled for the third place with the timing of 1:38.33sec.

Shakya, showing her magic in the pool, also won the 50m butterfly stroke, finishing ahead of Runa Pradhan of Little Angels, calling the selectors’ attention for the forthcoming 9th South Asian Federation Games. Her winning time stood at 35.03sec while Pradhan clocked 39.15sec. The third place in the event went to Stuti Singh of Suvatara School, who completed the race in 41.26sec.

In the 50 meters butterfly for girls aged 13-14, Sujana Shakya of Rato Bangla School clocked 46.24sec to snatch the gold medal away from Oshin Bharati of Sahid Dharma Bhakta School. Bharati completed the course in 46.86sec.

However, St. Xavier’s Sailesh Rana, despite winning the 50m butterfly event for the boys’ under-12 failed to achieve the mark required to be considered for an international meet. Rana pulled away from his opponents, leaving a gap of over eight seconds as he finished the race in 38.33 seconds. Marc Shawn Daniel of Allied Co-Ed finished the race in 45.18sec while Nawang Lama came third in 46.40sec.
