Encephalitis claims six, affects many Post Report NEPALGUNJ, July 22- At least six people have died while 18 others seriously affected and hospitalized after the Japanese Encephalitis dazzled the Terai region during rainy season in the recent days. According to Bheri Zonal Hospital, the victims of Japanese Encephalitis started to come in hospital from the month of Baisakh till this month. The victims who have died because of this disease are Sitapali Chaudhary and Jaki Kumari Khadka of Dang, Anpus Chaudhary, Priya Tharu, Subarna Chaudhary and Pooja Burma of Bardia. A total of 35 victims are reported to have been admitted at Bheri Zonal hospital out of which 18 have been hospitalized on this Sunday and Monday alone. Among these Sitapali Chaudhari of Sonpur-2, Dang is reported dead. Last year, 425 victims of Japanese Encephalitis were hospitalized at Bheri Zonal hospital out of which 72 have died. District Health Office has initiated vaccination against this disease. BPKIHS uses advance technique to treat boy Post Report KATHMANDU, July 22 A team of doctors at the B P Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) hospital successfully used a new operating technique to treat a 15-year-old boy who had sustained thigh fracture, a BPKIHS press statement received here said Sunday. Ambika Prasad Phuyal, a 15 year old boy from Morang district sustained multiple fractures in the right thigh bone and was admitted in BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan. "Interlocking nailing" of his fractured right thigh bone was successfully performed by a team of Orthopaedic surgeons comprising of Dr. H.L. Nag, Dr. Shishir Lakhey and Dr. Pradeep Gupta on 12 July, 2001, the statement said. Interlocking nailing is a relatively new and highly sophisticated method of treating difficult fractures of the thigh and leg bones for early mobilization out of bed. According to Dr. Shishir Lakhey, this technique requires specialized equipment and technical expertise which is available at BPKIHS. This surgery has been performed for the first time outside select centers inside Kathmandu. With increasing incidence of road traffic accidents, the necessity for such specialized orthopaedic services has also increased, he said. BPKIHS said this service is now available to the people of Eastern region of Nepal for minimal cost. Parsa bags better results in SLC exams Post Report BIRGUNJ, July 22 - Despite the overall dismal picture of the 2001 SLC results, Parsa District recorded a better performance with 48.19 percent results which is 17 percent up than the average results at the national level. "We had never ever dreamt that so many would get through," said the District Education Officer of Parsa. While Ananta Kumar, Principal of Mount Edmond Secondary School cited the new teaching technique introduced in the district and the hard work of the schools as reasons behind the unusually better result to go to the record this year. According to the educationists, the better success in Parsa is a result of the efforts to reform the examination system. Ram Raj Yadav, a local teacher said that despite wide spread protest against the new curriculum and violence committed to bring the entire system down to the knees, todays result has proved that it was indeed a wise step taken to reform the exams. Last year, only 26 percent of the students from a total of 900 students in Parsa district got through their SLC examination of which 336 students alone passed from the government schools and 662 from the private boarding schools. While government school recorded a 31 percent result, the pass percent in the private school soared up to over 80 percent. VDC chairman, office-bearers forced to resign in Tanahun Post Report DAMAULI, July 22 - Maoist workers are visiting different VDCs in Tanahun district and forcing the chairmen and other office-bearers to submit their resignation. They have already compelled the chairmen of Majhkot, Baidi and Kota VDCs in the southern belt to resign. They have been repeatedly threatening other VDC chairmen to resign. Secretary in Baidi VDC has informed that the VDC chairman Ran Bahadur Ale, Vice-chairman Dev Bahadur Malla, ward chairmen and nominated ward representatives have resigned. He added that the office-bearers of the VDC have also informed the district administration office and DDC office about their resignation. Similarly, Chairman of Majhkot VDC Man Bahadur Rana also informed that he has resigned from his post. According to DDC sources, chairman of Kota VDC, Aas Bahadur Gurung, has also resigned recently under compulsion from the Maoist workers. Sources in the DDC office said only Baidi VDC has informed formally about the resignation. However, the source said they have heard about the resignation given by some other VDC chairmen who have made it public by affixing the notice of the resignation in the trees. Of the 46 VDCs and one municipality in Tanahun district, the Maoist insurgents have gradually strengthened their positions in the VDCs located in the southern belt of the district. The Maoists are sending letters asking the VDC chairmen to resign. Those who have received their letters but have not yet resigned from their posts also do not go to the VDC office to carry out their function. "How can we work if there is no guarantee of security? It is better to resign," a VDC chairman told The Kathmandu Post. BP memorial day celebrated throughout the Kingdom KATHMANDU, July 22 (RSS)- Reports of the BP Memorial day being celebrated by organising various programmes have been received from different parts of the Kingdom of Nepal. NC Kirtipur town committee organised a talk programme on BPs socialist thinking to mark the BP memorial day. At the talk programme chaired by president of the NC Kirtipur town committee Harisharan Maharjan, NC district members Dhruba Khanal and Rajkumar Nakarmi, NC regional president Sanjaya Singh and Prof. Ramnath Khanal and others threw light on the personality of the popular leader. Likewise, NC Kathmandu district area no. 3 organised a function to pay tributes to the late popular leader BP Koirala. On the occasion the portrait of the late leader BP Koirala was garlanded and one minutes silence observed to pay tributes to him. Nuwakot district development committee organised an afforestation programme on its premises to pay tributes to founder of the Nepal communist party (NCP) Puspalal Shrestha and popular leader BP koirala yesterday. Speaking from the chair chairman of Nuwakot DDC Bharat Prasad Dhungana threw light on the invaluable contributions being made by NCP founder president Puspalal Shrestha and BP koirala for introducing democracy in the country. Tribhuvan Universtiy urged not to charge fees in dollarss Post Report KATHMANDU, July 22 - Miteri Nepal has voiced its opposition to the practice of the Tribhuvan University, the central university of Nepal, to charge fees in US dollar for foreign students of Nepalese origin studying in the university. The foreign students of Nepalese origin who pursue their Ph. D course in Nepali language and literature in the Tribhuvan University have been discouraged to study here due to this practice, the organisation has said. The organisation has urged the university to change this rule without delay and collect fees from the foreign students pursuing Nepalese studies at a par with the Nepalese students to ensure further advancement and wider publicity of Nepali language and literature. |
