Army, Police dominate Athletic events

KATHMANDU, July 25 – Tribhuvan Club and Mahendra Police Club players showed their dominance in the athletics as the selection matches for the upcoming 9th SAF Games kicked off Wednesday in the Dashrath Stadium here.

Sitaram Chaudhari of Mahendra Police Club set a new national record in triple-jump event as he jumped 15.20 meters. He also held the previous record of 15.10 meters.

The triumph of the Nepal Police continued with the 1500m women’s event, which Kanchimaya Koju won in 4:52.59sec followed by Nirmala Bharati from the same team. Alisa Awal of the Central Region finished third.

Police team also clinched the 100m women’s sprint as Devimaya Paneru clocked 12.38 seconds to finish just 0.34 seconds ahead of Smigya Shakya of the Central Region.

The lady police team dominated the women’s events completely as Bishnu Kafle crossed the finish line in the 400m race in 1:03.15sec followed by her teammate Bina Shrestha.

The army players were not far behind the police team as they clinched three top spots today. Gyan Bahadur Bohara of Trivhuban Club completed the 5000m race in 15:00.97sec, clinched the first place. Bohara, a well-known athlete, touched the ribbon just ahead of his colleague Narayan Chand. Nepal Police’s Yubaraj Adhikari finished third.

The other winners of the day for the Trivhuban Club were Hut Bahadur Joshi in men’s 800m race with a timing of 1:54.10sec and Aasha Ram Chaudhari in 400m at 49.49sec.


Central Region reigns supreme in Karate

KATHMANDU, July 25 - The selection matches of Karate for the 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games to be held at Peshawar coming October started at the covered hall of Tripureshwor on Wednesday.

In the 60 kg weight category, Rabi Maharjan of Central Region stood first while Santosh Khadka of the Western Region was placed second. Arun Bhujel of the Nepal Police secured the third place in the same category.

Likewise, Deepak Shrestha, also from the Central Region, won the title of 65 kg weight category defeating Ram Krishna Shrestha of the Eastern Region. Jiban Malla of the Mid-western Region managed the third position.

Central Region continued its winning streak as Dhojman Muktan won the 70 kg weight class contest while Shyam Sunder Kuwar of the Trivhuban Club was placed second. Amriti Pradhan of the Eastern Region claimed the third from the same category.

Central Region, showing their supremacy also bagged the 75 kg bout when Ram Saran Twati won against Fatta Bahadur Gurung of Western Region. Mid-western Region had to console themselves with Bharat BC’s third position.

Devendra KC took the day’s maiden title for the Police Club in the 80 kg weight category. Gangadhar Poudel of the Mid-western Region and Rakesh Shrestha of the Central Region begged the second and third position respectively.

The Eastern Region also clinched one title today when Hemanta Rai finished first in free weight category leaving Krishna Gurung and Nawaraj Maskey respectively on second and third position.


Luniya, Sarraf top list for Nepal

KATHMANDU, July 25 – Nepal, in the post-tournament ranking, managed to finish 15th — a jump from the pre-tournament 21— in the recently concluded International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy held in Canada earlier this month, says a press release from Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).

According to the release, Jay Prakash Sarraf, who impressed fans with his skills both with the bat and ball, finished second in the overall tournament batting average with an average of 83. Among the bowlers he was ranked 20th in terms of strike rate while the left arm spinner Paras Luniya finished in the list at 35th position. Sarraf finished the tournament with a strike rate of 21.6 while that of Luniya was 27.

Luniya was by far the best Nepali performer in the tournament. He took the maximum number of wickets for Nepal (6), finishing the overall list at 34th position. He was also ranked as the 9th best economic bowler of the tournament. He bowled with an economy rate of 2.37 runs an over. The next Nepali in the list was Binod Das at 21st spot.

However, in terms of the bowling averages, Luniya— with 10.66 runs per scalp— was the 12th best while Sarraf was ranked 21st in the list.

Ganesh Shahi— the Nepali skipper for the tour— with 8 dismissals in the championship, also finished in the top ten in the most dismissals by a fielder or a wicketkeeper. He was in the 8th spot.

The ICC trophy was participated by 23 associate members of the ICC.
