Army, Police athletes hold sway

KATHMANDU, July 27 - Rajendra Bhandari of the Trivhuban Club set a new national record in the 3000m steeple-chase in the final day of the athletics selection tournament held at Dashrath Stadium on Friday.

Bandari, made an impressive start and led the rest of the pack throughout the race. He finished the race clocking the
time of 9:21.46 sec, erasing the previous national mark by over three seconds. Madan Giri, also from Tribhuvan Club was the former national record holder at 9:25.09sec.

Pramod Khadka of the Mahendra Police Club clinched the second place, finishing the race in 12:24.10sec.

As expected, Yam Bahadur Pudasaini of Tribhuvan Club won the 35 km marathon with the timing of 1 hour and 59.29sec.

His fellow clubmate Arjun Basnet gave him a tough chase, crossing the tape just 37sec behind. Rewat Bahadur Dahal ensured Tribhuvan Club’s 1-2-3 as he completed the race in the third place at 2 hrs and 2.02sec.

A total of 44 athletes, including both men and women, will be selected for the close camp training in the run upto the 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games which are being held in Islamabad, Pakistan in October. As many as 40 athletes of the 44 are from Trivhuban Club, Mahendra Police Club and Central Region while remaining four will be decided upon a meeting among athletics coaches.
