National Games postponed

Post Report

KATHMANDU, June 13 - The fifth National Games Executive Committee decided to postpone the fifth National Games, scheduled to begin from June 3, the National Sports Council (NSC) said Wednesday.

According to an NSC press release, the meeting held under the chairmanship of the state minister of Education and Sports, Dilendra Prasad Badu, the decision was taken, taking into account the current situation when the entire nation is mourning the untimely demise of King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and Crown Prince Dipendra along with other members of the Royal Family.

The meeting also decided that the selection of players for the ninth South Asian Federation (SAF) Games, which are to be held in Pakistan later this year, would be held after a meeting with related sports associations. The committee asked those associations and officials to clear the advance amount which was issued for the purpose of the Games within 35 days.

"Since the Royal patron is no more with us and the whole nation is in mourning, we can’t imagine organising such a grand ceremony within a short span of time," the member-secretary of NSC, Binod Shanker Palikhe told The Kathmandu Post. "The stark reality is the lack of budget too," added Palikhe.

Earlier, the meeting offered condolences to the unbelievable passing away of the Late King Birendra, Late Queen Aishwarya, Crown Prince Dipendra and other members of the Royal Family. It also offered felicitations to His Majesty King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and Her Majesty Queen Komal Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah.
