Mad Mullas
I read with great dismay the news items entitled "Talibans to destroy
ancient Buddha statues" (March 1, 2001, TKP).
Surely, it raises the concern of all sane people in the world. At the age of
globalization, if a person such as Omar comes to power and destroys everything that goes
against Islamic laws, what will happen to this world? Unthinkable! If we refer world
history, we will find Islamic believers were fanatics and had done harm to the followers
of other religions, as well as to the Muslims. God is common to all human beings. People
call Him/Her by different names. Every God teaches humanity to be compassionate to all and
live peacefully without indulging in immoral and violent activities. What will be the
reaction of Mulla Omar if other reactionary forces think mosques are not compatible to
their culture and start pulling them down everywhere in this world? I hope Omar will come
to his senses before Talibans demolish stone statues of Buddha in Afghanistan, and will
stop doing such inhuman things. I am sure that pulling down statues will do more harm to
Islam than to any body else, because people will lose their respect for Islam in the event
of destroying such historically, culturally and religiously important statues. God, please
forgive mad Mullas.
