Kathmandu to host 5th National Sports Meet

KATHMANDU, March 2 - Come May 7, then the nation is likely to witness the
making of new national sports heroes at the 5th National Sports Meet slated be held in the
capital.
Announcing the date of the launch of the mega sports event, the National
Sports Council (NSC) today also said that more than 1,425 sportsperson are expected to
gather for the Meet. The venue for the Meet has been changed from Karnali to Kathmandu.
NSC also said that the Meet is scheduled prior to the selection match for the
Ninth South Asian Federation (SAF) Games, due to start from September 2001 in Pakistan.
All of the 14 events included in the National Sports Meet are the events Nepal is
participating in the SAF Games.
The athletes will be participating in athletics, boxing, taekwondo, karate,
weight lifting, mens and womens volleyball, table tennis, football, mens
kabbadi, swimming, wrestling, shooting, badminton and Squash. Each team from the five
development regions, Royal Nepal Army team and Nepal Police team will be contesting for
741 medals.
The participants of the Sports Meet will be selected from the District level
and Region level games that will be held in all the Districts and Regions from March 16 .
The Ministry of Education and Sports has approved the expected budget of Rs
46,072,510 for the Meet. A 151-member organizing committee has been formed under the
chairmanship of Minister for Education and Sports.
Answering to the queries raised by the pressmen, State Minister Badu said
that the Parliaments Public Account Committee (PAC) will decide whether the NSC was
involved is corruption during the eight SAF Games. "The involvement of PAC in this
matter can be taken as start of positive trend to curb the corruption in the NSC,"
said Badu.
However, NSC Member-Secretary, Binod Shankar Palikhe, denied the charges on
him and said that he was accused because of a biased report presented before the
Committee. "The NSC was never involved in the financial dealing during the eighth SAF
Games," he said. "All the allegations of corruption made against me are due to
personal prejudices," he added.
Speaking about the matter of All Nepal Football Association (ANFA)
controversy, State Minister Badu reassured the press to solve it as soon as possible.
"It is just a matter of days to find the solution to this problem," he added.
However, Geeta Rana, President of the ANFA backed by the NSC, said that
either the team affiliated to her will participate in the World Cup selection match or
Nepal will not send the team at all.
