Melting faith

At a time when the country is deeply engrossed in a state of chaos resulting from alleged involvement of Girija Prasad Koirala in the much talked Lauda Air deal and Maoists entering their 5th year of so-called ‘People’s War’, Prime Minister Koirala is all set to embark on his France visit with his habitual jumbo delegation, comprising of siblings, tycoons and mandarins.

This clearly shows that he has no intention to resolve the ongoing crisis confronting the nation. It was he who forced his predecessor Krishna Prasad Bhattarai to step down alleging him of bad governance and incapable of maintaining law and order - before the latter could complete his French odyssey. But now he insists that stepping down under pressure would set bad precedent.

Unfortunately, the situation is just reverse — with Girija Prasad Koirala sticking to the chair and Krishna Prasad Bhattarai trying to pull him down. Unlike last year, the entire opposition is making many hullabaloos to subvert Koirala. It is often said that Nepal has a history of radical change every decade. Against the backdrop of the intensified Maoist advancements (attacks) with opposition leaving no stones unturned to overthrow Koirala-ism and continuous melting faith of the populace on democratic institutions, another change could just be in the offing. I guess that might be either anarchism, Maoism or Demagogues.
