Nepal start off with three gold

KATHMANDU, March 7 - Nepali boxers grabbed three gold medals in various weight categories on the second day of the First South Asian Under-19 Boxing tournament being held at Dashrath Stadium covered hall.

Bigyan Lama of Nepal defeated Md Farizul Islam of Bangladesh in the 48 kg weight category of 13-15 years age group. Bigyan began to score points right from the beginning with his offensive technique. Although Bangladeshi boxer showed a good spirit with counter attacks, Lama was declared winner by the unanimous decision of the judges.

In the final of the 45 kg weight class of 13-15 years age group, Amit Tamang of Nepal beat Md Shakil Manun of Bangladesh to claim gold. Both the boxers showed the superb fighting spirit in the closely fought bout.

Bishan Limbu of Nepal clinched the third gold for Nepal today defeating M Safiullah of Bangladesh in the final of the 54 weight category of the 13-15 years age group.

M Mehmud Ali of Bangladesh claimed the gold medal in the match against Rikesh Ghale of Nepal after referee stopped the contest (RSC) declaring Ghale as outclass.

Faisal Mulla of Bangladesh grabbed the gold medal in the 40 kg weight class among the 13-15 years boys defeating Ravinda S Patabendi of Sri Lanka while K S Weera Singhe of Sri Lanka beat the Nepali boxer Dipendra Limbu in the 42 kg weight class of 15-17 years boys to claim the gold of the event.

Although, Nepal dominated the 13-15 age group, it was the Indian boxers who dominated the proceedings in other age groups proving to be too good for their opponents. M Kamal of India knocked his opponent Manoj Chaudhary out in the first round of the bout to enter the final of the 54 kg weight category of 17-19 age group.

Among the 15-17 boys of 54 kg weight category, Bijendra Singh of India defeated Kumar Rai of Nepal as RSC outclass in the second round of the match. The bout had to be stopped because of the injury sustained by the Nepali boxer during the fight.

Sanjay Kumar of India entered the finals of the 67 kg weight class among 17-19 boys after Kapil Rai (Nepal) had to retire. D Prasad of India entered the final of the match defeating M Nadem Hossian of Bangladesh. The match was stopped by the referee in the second round in the 51 kg weight category of 15-17 age group.

Md Akhtarul of Bangladesh defeated Bipin Shrestha of Nepal among the 15-17 years boys in the 57 kg weight class to secured his place in the final event of the tournament. M Kamal Parvery of Bangladesh entered the finals of the 63.5 kg weight class among the 17-19 boys beating Purna Bahadur Lama of Nepal in a match played earlier today.
