Koiralas incurable ego
This refers to the news report and editorial
entitled "PM seeks party workers support" and "Let him speak"
published on February 19, 2001, TKP.
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala seems more
concerned about his chair than about the pathetic condition of the entire nation. To
satisfy the blunt ego, he has time and again put the democratic values at stake.
Multi-party system has suffered strokes during his tenure. He has weakened the democracy,
raising fingers at the opposition parties and accusing them of subverting the system.
Is the Prime Minister personally involved in the
scam or has he taken any kickback? The established fact is that the corruption has been
done while leasing the Lauda Aircraft. In addition, the aviation has been rocked by
another corruptions in fuel purchase. All these faulty deals have been committed by his
fellow-ministers, partymen and bureaucrats loyal to him. In other words, wrongdoing has
happened under his leadership. He, therefore, must take responsibilities and resign from
the post.
As head of the government, Koirala has visited
many developed and developing countries, where he must have observed being a leader the
know-how of good governance. What stops him from applying those skills here? Nothing but
his personal grudge. Many leaders have set precedence by scarifying their post due to
corrupt cabinet mates. They have also paved the way for easy leadership transfer within
the party. But adamant Koirala threatens his own party MPs, saying he will hold mid-term
polls if they do not save him from the wrath of the opposition parties. Poor lawmakers do
not have any choice other than to succumb to his appeal, which he often makes in the name
of party unity.
Violent protest outside the parliament will
strengthen the vested interest of Girija-wadi Congress. Opposition must show some wisdom
and resort to the constitutional means for the expulsion of Koirala. For this, they should
not hesitate to cooperate with the NC dissident camp. Yet another revolution is required
to get rid of tainted politicians.
