Birgunj continue winning streak

Post Report

KATHMANDU, March 29 - Birgunj team continued its winning streak with the third successive win in the ongoing Under-19 Regional selection cricket tournament held at Tribhuvan University ground today.

Birgunj boys defeated their opponents Nepalgunj by a huge difference of 84 runs to dominate the tournament. Electing to take first strike after winning the toss, Birgunj posted a score of 227 runs at the end of allotted 50 overs losing five wickets.

It was Sanjay Wonjon’s 94 runs which helped his team to put up the decent total against their opponents. Sanjay who came into the crease after the wicket of opener Prakash fell down managed to sum up the huge individual contribution with seven hits to the fence facing 139 balls. Binod Das played a wonderful cameo of 39 runs out of 33 balls belting five boundaries off the Nepalgunj bowlers.

The bowlers of Nepalgunj could not do much against the patience to remain on the crease shown by the Birgunj boys. Meraj Ansari bowled pretty well though he could only gather one wicket in his quota of 10 overs giving 38 runs. Rafiq Ansari was rather expensive in his seven overs to give away 47 runs to claim one wicket. Ramesh Thakur and Irfan Siddique also took one wicket each.

Nepalgunj, who are considered as the underdogs of the tournament, came out to face a difficult target of almost five runs per over against the vicious bowling attack of their rivals. Rafiq, who came as an opener tried to consolidate the game with his individual contribution of 23 runs that he scored with the help of two boundaries facing 39 balls. Unlike Rafiq, it was too difficult for his partner Narendra Bohra to remain in the crease for a long time. Narendra returned to the pavilion with only 9 runs to his account. Shantosh Shrestha, the highest run maker among his team mates, played a sensible game to remain in the crease to score 24 runs. The Nepalgunj team who lost their wickets at the regular intervals could not reach anywhere near the required score. It was the superb bowling performance of Murtuja Hawari which smashed the batting line up of the Nepalgunj to pack up with 142 runs on the scoreboard. Murtuja claimed four wickets in his 10 overs spending 23 runs to shatter the winning dream of his rivals. Vijay Mehta and Sanjay Regmi also claimed one wicket each to win the match.

Sanjay Wonjan was declared man of the match for his excellent inning of 94 runs which more or less decided the match in favour of his team. Tomorrow’s match will be played between Birgunj and Bhairahawa.
