Code of Conduct for journalists not followed
Post Report
KATHMANDU, March 30 - Even five years after the formulation of the present
Code of Conduct for Journalists, it has not been followed by many professionals.
This was the main issue at the special interaction program organized by the
Press Council Nepal in order to monitor and revise the code of conduct for journalists,
here today.
However the majority of the journalists present there were of an opinion that
formulation of a stricter code of conduct would be against the present Constitution which
grants the freedom of speech.
Veteran journalist Durga Nath Sharma, pointed out that there was a need for
different association for the journalists working in the electronic and broadcasting media
as according to him the word Press did not incorporate those media.
Other journalists like P Kharel and Raghu Pant were of the opinion that
journalists should follow the code of conduct voluntarily as nobody has either the power
or the ability to implement it. "If conduct of the journalist is to be listed and
implemented by force then better it be changed into a law", Kharel said.
Former Member of Parliament and journalist Hiranya Lal Shrestha said that
like in other countries minimum pay scale for the journalists has to be set and the
government has to provide insurance and security for the journalists.
