Birgunj boys on top

Post Report

KATHMANDU, March 30 - Birgunj, continuing its brilliant run of form in the ongoing Under - 19 Regional selection cricket tournament, crushed its lesser fancied rivals Bhairahawa by 198 runs in the match played today at the Tribhuvan University Ground, Kirtipur.

Birgunj posted a mammoth total of 275 runs at the loss of eight wickets after winning the toss and electing to bat. Birgunj boys batted with lots of determination coupled with fine strokeplay. The score was largely possible due to masterful innings of Binod Das, who scored 90 runs off just 79 balls. His seemed to bat with ease on the wicket which may not be the easiest to bat on once the bowlers find their rhythm. His innings comprised of nine fours and a six. Das, the number five batsman of Birgunj, was severe on the Bhairahawa bowlers, scoring off them all round the park.

The Birgunj batting card must have been a joy to their fans as seven of the batsmen reached double figure in the match. Apart from Binod Das, Kanishk Chougai was another batsmen who played the Bhairahawa bowler with utmost ease. He was, however, lot more patient than Das, scoring 45 runs out of 63 balls. He hit four balls to the fence in the essay. He looked good enough for a half century and must be a disappointed man after getting so close to fifty and getting out. However, he showed enough of grit to stay on wicket and scoring off bad balls as they were hurled at him.

Kirtarth Anand and Murtaja Hawari also provided useful contribution to the team’s total, chipping in with 23 runs each. As many as eight bowlers were used by the Bharahawa team, of which many failed to impress. Basant Regmi was the pick of the bowlers taking two wickets for 40 runs in his quota of 10 overs. Regmi was the most economical of Bhairahawa bowlers and it’s not difficult to imagine what Birgunj score could have been without his performance.

For Bhairahawa, it was never going to be easy scoring more than 5.5 runs an over against the bowling attack of Birgunj, which has been a tough proposition for the batsmen from most of the teams. Though, the result of the match may not be surprising, one would have expected Bhairahawa boys to have put up some fight. Instead, they just surrendered meekly to the Birgunj lads. Bhairahawa boys did not try to stick to the crease to get their eyes set in and look for the bad balls to score enabling themselves to get near to the Birgunj score. The boys seemed in a hurry to get to the victory target, which meant that they would be risking their wickets. Manoj Bhandari was the only batsman who made any impact with 24 runs off 58 balls.

For Birgunj, Sanjay Regmi was the best bowler taking four for 13 off his 9.1 overs. Most of the bowlers from Birgunj were up to the task, bowling a good tight line and not letting the batsmen any room to free their arms.

Binod Das was adjudged the man of the match for his performance with the bat as well as ball. He scored 90 runs and bowled misely to take a wicket giving just eight runs in his six overs.
