12 killed as truck falls into Trishuli

By Krishna Bhandari

CHITWAN, May 18 - Twelve people died in the snow-fed Trishuli River after a Kathmandu-bound truck carrying marriage party plunged about 40 metres down into the river from the busy Narayangadh-Mugling Highway, about two km south of Mugling, this morning, according to Bharatpur-based District Traffic Police.

The police said the truck (Na 2 Kha 739) plunged into the river after hitting a parapet on its own side at Tuhin Khola.

The deceased identified so far are the truck driver Raj Kumar Thapa, helper Ramchandra Subedi, Sarala Poudel, Kavita Poudel, Rita Poudel, Sahara Dhakal and Mithila Subedi, all from Hetauda Municipality-9.

Likewise, others confirmed drowned are Jagannath Adhikari from Prem Basti of Bharatpur Municipality-7 and Sunita Adhikari along with her two daughters - Swikriti and Smriti - from Simaltandi of Chitwan district.

One of the passengers Nawaraj Poudel from Hetauda Municipality-9, however, managed to survive the fatal accident by jumping off the falling truck.

Poudel told the police that all the passengers were heading towards Naubise, Dhading to participate in a wedding ceremony of their relative.

The police and the locals had been searching for the missing people in the swollen river throughout the day.

Relatives of the drowned passengers blocked the busy highway at about five p.m., accusing the local administration of delaying the search for the victims. Thousands of long distance buses and other transport vehicles on both the sides remained stranded along the highway due to the blockade.
