IGP
without principles
This refers to the news report entitled "IGP blames
police for increasing violence" published on May 20, 2001, TKP.
By blaming the police for being responsible for the
increase in the number of Maoists, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has turned
himself into a politician without principles. His claim that the police have killed
innocent people is absolutely valid, but what has the government or the police done to
redress this serious violation of human rights? Nothing. When these incidents of
extrajudicial killing occurred, the IGP was the number two man in the police, and if he is
really serious about the comments he made in Dailekh, he has sufficient evidence to
prosecute those responsible for these atrocities. However, only time will tell if he has
the guts and grit to do this. Otherwise, it will become evident that he is only paying
cheap lip service just like his boss, the Home Minister. The IGP should also ensure that
the horrendous activities being carried out in all police torture cells is minimized and
eventually stopped. First and foremost, the relatives and stooges of the IGP have to be
discouraged from conducting illegal activities under his covert or overt blessings. Then
only corruption and immorality within the police organization will decrease, and in turn,
efficiency will increase.
