TU to introduce Buddhist studies

KATHMANDU, May 25 - A separate department is being developed for Buddhist Studies in Tribhuwan University, said Dr Nareshman Bajracharya, the corordinator of Post-Graducate Diploma in Buddhist Studies.

"We have prepared the proposals and are going soon for the necessary administrative process," he said, while presenting a paper on academic importance of Buddhist Studies in Higher Educaion.

Presently, the newly developed faculty is running under the Central Department of Nepali Culture, History and Archaeology.

Dr Bajracharya said that developing an institution for Buddhist Studies in Nepal is of great importance because this is the birthplace of Lord Buddha and there is a plenty of Buddhist manuscripts and inscriptions and it makes a major part of the country’s art, culture and architecture.

He said the government of Nepal has not shown interest to studies, research and publication of such ancient treasure of Buddhist manuscripts.
