SAF Games medallist attacked

Post Report

BIRGUNJ, Nov 5 – A bronze medallist in the 8th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games, heavy weight wrestler Bramhadev Yadav, escaped an attempt on his life as seven masked men attacked him brutally on Sunday.

Yadav, who is now admitted to the local Narayani hospital, told The Kathmandu Post that the assailants charged at him with sticks when he was on his way home at 8pm on Sunday on his bicycle carrying a 13-year-old boy, son of a neighbour.

"They were 7-8 in number, who were hiding in a rice field about 2km to the east of the main city and they attacked me all of a sudden," he said. "One of them even fired with his gun at me but luckily I got away with that."

Yadav also said that he was carrying Rs 27,000 with him but the besiegers did not intend to loot the money. Yadav said that the attackers were all masked but he could recognise one of them. He has identified one of the offenders as his neighbour Hari Narayan Shah, however, he says that he does not know the reason behind the attack.

Yadav received 30 stitches on his head at the hospital and regained consciousness following the treatment that lasted two hours. He had fled the scene after receiving severe injury on his head and other parts of the body. He said that he somehow got the courage to flee as he heard one of the assailants shout: "He must be killed."

The main worry for Yadav now, he says, is his training regimen, which consisted of 3-4 hours of workout. He is the heavy weight national champion and was selected into national squad for the 9th SAF Games slated to be held in Islamabad.
