Moktan wins karate bronze

KATHMANDU, Nov 7 - Nepali karateka Dhoj Man
Moktan anchored a bronze medal at the 5th Asian Karate Championship that was held in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia from November 2-4, the National Sports Council (NSC) said in its press
release on Wednesday.
Moktan, gold medalist in the 8th South Asian
Federation (SAF) Games, won the bronze medal in 70kg weight category defeating his
opposition from Jordan in the first round, Hong Kong in the second round and UAE in the
quarterfinals. He lost to Irani opponent in a closely contested semifinal bout.
This is the first time that any Nepali karateka
has clinched a medal at continental level karate championship with full affiliation of
Asian Karate Federation.
Meanwhile, according to chief karate instructor
Thaneshwor Rai, Dipak Shrestha, Ramsaran Twanti and Bharat Bashyal also entered the second
round of the championship. Nepal field a total of five karetekas in the tournament. The
three-day event drew participants from 25 countries.
Rai also informed that the Nepali contestants
who participated at the championship were preparing for the 14th Asian Games, which are
slated for next year in Pusang, South Korea.
The 17-member Nepali karate team, headed by
Nepal Karate Federation general-secretary Dawa Gurung returned the capital on Tuesday.
