Carpet
export plunges by 25pc
Post Report
BIRGUNJ, Nov 14
Plagued mainly by a whopping tumble in the export of hand-knotted woolen carpet to Europe,
the overall carpet export, during the first three months of the current fiscal year,
recorded a plunge of 25 per cent.
According to the
statistics complied by the Birgunj Customs, the overall export of carpet to the third
countries during the period remained 376,214 square meter whereas the such export during
the same period last year was 512,482 square meter.
Despite a whopping
decline in the volume of export of the woolen carpet, the overall carpet export earnings
has increased as compared to the same period last year mainly due to the depreciation of
Nepali currency against dolor.
The total first quarter
export earnings has touched Rs 1.83 billion whereas such incomes during same period last
year was Rs 1.57 billion.
The most worrisome fact
for the Nepali carpet industry is the dire decline of 50 per cent in the export of carpet
to the Europe, particularly to Germany.
The overall export of
the carpet to the Europe, during the period, has plunged by around 50 per cent and
remained 65,000 square meter against 116,166 square meter recorded during the like period
last year.
With a plunge of around
100,000 square meter, carpet export towards Germany has also declined to touch just
257,520 square meter whereas such export last year was 361,943 square meter.
However, the robust
growth in the carpet export towards America largely prevented the overall export industry
from a complete collapse. The export to America, during the period, recorded a robust
surged of 45 per cent and jumped to 48,684 square meter from 26,464 square meter. |
