Nepal continues to enjoy Norways priority list

KATHMANDU, Nov 21
The Government of Norway has included Nepal in its list of priority countries for
assistance and has pledged for its continued financial and technical support in
Nepals development endeavor.
In its newly prepared
list of priority countries for assistance, the Norwegian Government has reduced the number
of countries to seven, which has created fear that Nepal could be ousted from the list.
Norwegian International
Development Minister Hilde F Johnson during a meeting Tuesday informed Finance Minister Dr
Ram Sharan Mahat about it. Mahat is currently in Norway visit.
Earlier, Dr Mahat had
requested the government of Norway to include Nepal in its list of priority countries for
assistance.
During the meeting, the
two ministries held talks on strengthening bilateral and multilateral economic
cooperation. On the occasion, Dr Mahat apprised Johnson of the present development efforts
of Nepal and requested him to extend both private and government cooperation on
infrastructure sector as hydropower, rural electrification and rural telecommunications.
Minister Mahat also briefed the economic reforms programs being adopted in Nepal.
During the meeting the
government of Norway showed its keen interest in the educational sector as a part of
strategic programme of reducing poverty in Nepal.
Dr Mahat also
participated in an interaction programme related with hydropower and financial
institutions in Oslo with high officials and investors and requested them to pour their
investments in Nepal particularly in the hydropower sector.
Dr Mahat also met with
Tove Strand, director of NORAD the Norwegian International Development Agency
and discussed various ways to promote mutual cooperation.
