Deuba’s missed opportunity

This refers to Shyam KC's article entitled "Deuba’s missed opportunity" (Nov 22, 2001, TKP).

I agree with the writer. After all, Sher Bahadur Deuba had an golden opportunity to show his ability by solving the Maoist problem, and thereby introducing several revolutionary programmes to eradicate poverty, create employment opportunity, mitigate corruption and uplift the social standard of so called low caste people. But Deuba has failed almost on all the crucial fronts, and his ambitious eight points programmes are now in the doldrums. When he came to power, he was backed up by his own party cadres, supported by the UML and other small parties. But due to his personal interest, he reshuffled the cabinet and inducted 41 members of parliament, which consists of 36.20 percent of the total lawmakers of NC. He has himself started to erode the hope and faith of over 2.34 crore people of this country.

Although he has missed almost all the opportunities that could be utilized for the betterment of Nepalese people, yet, he can do many things by wasting no time to probe and take actions against those who have amassed wealth in a wrongful manner and by holding talks with the Maoists.

Well done

I’ve been a regular reader of the national daily The Kathmandu Post for the last two years. At first I was quite reluctant to read it. It was because of the incessant influence of English newspapers published from India.

I used to think that the India newspapers were of high standard and didactic. But these days, when I compare TKP with some Indian newspapers, I find it no less standard than them. Definitely, there is widespread market in India for English newspapers but not here. However, the number of readers TKP has earned so far is quite impressive.

I am sure, your daily has become one of the leading national newspapers in Nepal. I wish it all the best to meet new challenges.
