Knights, 10’ers into last eight

KATHMANDU, Oct 1 – Knights and 10’ers listed their names to the quarter-finals of the 2nd Amrit Trophy Basketball (ATB) Championship with win over Galkopakha Youth Club and SOS teams respectively on Monday.

Knights outscored Galkopakha Youth Club (GYC) 54-46 in the Pool A match to follow the Pool leader Lincoln School in the last eight while 10’ers routed SOS 43-28 in the Pool C encounter. The match between Unique A and Peace Zone Youth Club on Tuesday decides the second team to represent Pool C in the quarter-finals.

Bardan Thapa of Knights scored the highest in the match with 18 points whereas Nirod Shrestha of GYC scored 13 points.

In the Pool C match of the day, Nirmal Gurung of 10’ers emerged as the highest scorer with 14 points to his name while Sunder Thapa of SOS scored 8—highest for his team.

Earlier in the day, Ranjana Cassette Center (RCC) overcame a stiff challenge of Public Youth Campus (PYC) by 37-30 in the Pool B match.

RCC scored quick eight points to stretch their lead in the first quarter as PYC could only manage a poor two. The things hardly improved for the Public Youth boys even in the second quarter as RCC dominated the scoreboard adding 10 more points to their tally. PYC managed to narrow the gap scoring 8 points.

The third quarter proved to be the best for the PYC as they outscored RCC adding 12 points against RCC’s 9. However, the early lead proved decisive at the end with both the teams going neck to neck in the fourth quarter RCC scoring 10 points and PYC managing 8.

Birod Malla from RCC was the highest scorer while Ram Prasad Rajbhandari scored 12 points for Public Youth.

Likewise, in the Pool D match of the day, Brigade Boys Club (BBC) defeated Unique B 48-33. Anup Singh Karki of BBC was the highest scorer of the match with 16 points to his credit while Ichha Maharjan scored 8 points.


Gurung takes Golf title

KATHMANDU, Oct 1 - KC Gurung played a one-under par his handicap for 37 points to win the Japanese Ambassador Cup Golf Tournament Sunday at Royal Nepal Golf Club.

Maj. Bijaya Moktan, who scored 33 points, settled for second.

Meanwhile, Shastika Shrestha clinched the ladies title scoring 25 points while Kim Mi Ran was declared the best ladies golfer. Similarly, Spandan Lama was declared the winner among junior golfers with 25 points.

Among other categories, G Chitrakar and CB Bhandari were declared the winners of the longest drive while the French Ambassador C Brosini was adjudged the booby winner.

The annual tournament was coincided with the farewell of the out going Japanese Ambassador Mitsuaki Kojima who distributed the prizes and trophies to the winners of the tournament. Speaking on the occasion, Kojima said that the Japanese Embassy will continue to support the development of the game of golf in Nepal through regular sponsorship in the Japanese Ambassador Golf Cup in future.

President of RNGC Shiddeshwor Kumar Singh, appreciating the Japanese Embassy’s continual support for the organisation of the tournament at the club, said that the cooperation has contributed a lot towards the development of the game among the Nepali golfers.


YCC reach Dashain Trophy semis

KATHMANDU, Oct 1 - Yungubahal Youth Club (YYC) registered a comfortable 7-wicket victory over Makhan Mahadev Club (MMC) to advanc in the semi-final of the 3rd Dashain Trophy cricket tournament being played at the local Tundikhel ground on Monday.

MCC’s decision to bat first after winning the toss, proved fatal as their batting flatered with the innings coming to close at 77in 25.3 overs.

MMC’s Mahesh Rajopadhya was the only batsman who put on some challenge against the precise bowling attack of YYC. He tried to consolidate the teams’ innings scoring 31 runs that included two beautifully driven boundaries.

Birendra Man Singh was the other MMC batsman, who reached at the double figure making 12 runs.

Shyam Maharjan, who was later declared ‘man of the match’ spelled disaster to MMC batting as he clinched three wickets in his seven-over spell conceding 26 runs. Raju Maharjan bowled economically giving away just 10 runs with two wickets in five overs. Zameer Khan and Karma Maharjan claimed one wicket apiece.

In Reply, YYC openers made a confident start puting presure on MMC bowlers. Dilip Singh made a steady 25 runs hitting three boundaries and remained unbeaten. Nirajeet Rimal provided a handy support to Singh with 14 with two fours. The first down Karma Maharjan played a scintillating knock of 23 runs with four boundaries.

Apart from Sudir and Noor, who claimed a wicket apiece, the MMC bowling otherwise failed to impress. Mephi Cricket club will take on Rathicol Cricket Club in another quarterfinal berth on Tuesday.


BP Memorial karate concludes

KATHMANDU (PR) - The 2nd BP Memorial karate and kickboxing championship organised by Chapagaun Dojo, an affiliate of Nepal Karate Federation (NKF), concluded here Monday.

The championship featured 400 participants from 33 dojos of the valley.

The winning karatekas in the championship includes: Sanjaya Koju (30kg), Mande Kaji Shrestha (35kg), Raju Shrestha (40kg), Mukunda Maharjan (45kg), Binod Maharjan (50kg), Sahila Gamal (55kg), Umesh Malla (60kg) and Prem Lal Bhasiya (open category).

Likewise, the winners in the women’s segment were Pratibha Darshan (40kg), Sunita Lama (45kg), Krishana Kala KC (50kg), Amrita Shakya (55kg) and Sunita Maharjan (60kg).

In kickboxing, Narendra Chitrakar (45kg), Hari Bahadur Shrestha (50 kg), Amar Kayastha (55kg), Pradip Kumar Madel (60kg) and Arun Singkhada (open category) won the gold medals.

Similarly, in women’s kickboxing, Tulasa Thapa (45kg), Shanti Lama (50kg), Suprima Vaidhya (55kg) clinched the gold.

The Lagankhel dojo of Lalitpur was awarded as the best dojo while Rabindra Shrestha and Pratima Darsan claimed the best karatekas award. In the kick-boxing category, Surendra Kapali and Tulasa Thapa bagged the best player award.

Treasurer of NKF Bhusan Shamsher Rana gave away the medals and certificates to the participants.
