Unique ‘A’ pull thrilling win

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Oct 2 - Unique ‘A’ booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 2nd Amrit Trophy Basketball (ATB) championship following a 42-35 win over Peace Zone Youth Club on Tuesday.

In one of the most sensational battles so far, both the teams were locked at 31 points at the end of regulation time, forcing additional five minutes with Peace Zone players struggling to check the opponents in the dying seconds.

Unique ‘A’ team’s Sudhir Maharjan, who shared the honour of top scorer with Rabindra Maharjan, both netting 17 points apiece, wrapped up the match scoring a three-pointer 30 seconds from time.

Earlier, a three-pointer followed by two-point basket within 15 seconds by Peace Zone’s top scorer Tashi Chirring, who scored 10 points, forced the match to the extra time leaving the score levelled at 31-31.

Scoring was few and far between in the first quarter as both the teams failed to break each other’s defensive shackles. Peace Zone, though, took a slender 6-4 lead.

The second quarter too witnessed low score with only nine points being added with only one point to choose between the two, Peace Zone holding on to a 10-9 lead. Unique ‘A’ restored parity at 17-17 points into the third quarter that led the match to pick its climax going into the last quarter. The teams indulged in quick exchanges of free flowing baskets and the score was tied at 31-31.

Earlier, Nepal Commerce Campus edged Ashirbad College 44-30, while Gyanodaya demolished Tri-Chandra College 67-20. In the day’s last match, Pratap Sharma of Wilson Academy guided his team to a narrow victory of 43-41 against Learning Realm School (LRI), scoring 16 points.
