Shrestha smashes six-year-old record

Post Report

LALITPUR, Aug 31 - Alice Shrestha smashed the six-year-old national record in the 100 meters breaststroke in the opening day of the 12th Open Swimming Championship which got underway at the Birendra International Swimming Complex, Satdobato on Friday.

Shrestha sliced off more than two seconds from the previous mark of 1min 15.75sec set by Lal Bahadur Parajuli in the 7th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games held at Madras in 1995, clocking 1min 13.53 sec in the Open boys category. Laxman Khanal and Santa Kumar Rai took silver and bronze medals respectively in the event.

Likewise, Nayana Shakya broke her own national mark clocking 1min 29.54sec in the 100 meters breaststroke in the ladies’ open section. The earlier record was 1min 29.63sec. Bibidha Rimal followed Nayana at second place.

Seldom has Shakya come out of the pool with a single gold. And it was no exception today as she went on to add two more gold medals. After her record shattering race, she also won in 100 meters backstroke and 50 meters butterfly in the ladies’ open category with the timing of 1:29.62sec and 0:35.09sec respectively. Suzanna Shakya and Salina Tamang followed Nayana in second and third place respectively in the backstroke. Suzanna netted her second silver in the 50 meters butterfly while the third spot went to Stuti Singh.

Though Shakya and Shrestha fashioned two records, today’s show belonged to Oshin Bharati. The youngest of the participants in the under-12 girls, she grabbed gold in the 50 meters butterfly leaving behind Pratima Manandhar and Youfu Thapa for second and third spots respectively.
