Final selection for football, athletics concludes

KATHMANDU, Sept 3 - The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) picked up the final 20 footballers to represent Nepal in the 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games starting on October 6, said an ANFA press release issued on Monday.

A selection committee formed under senior coaches Krishna Thapa, Shyam Shrestha and assistant coach Milan Hada selected the 20-membes final squad on the basis of the selection tournament that took place at the Dashrath Stadium from August 29 till September 2.

A total of 46 footballers made it through the preliminary selection while 32 were in the second round, who participated in the final selection tournament.

Football players: Sanjiv Joshi, Ritesh Thapa, Ujjwal Manandhar (goal keeper); Rajendra Tamang, Anil Subba, Dipak Poudel, Madhu Karki, Naresh Thapa, Narayan Manandhar (defence); Ananta Thapa, Ramesh Gyawali, Raj Kumar Gurung, Kumar Thapa, Dipak Lama, Prakash Rana Magar (mid-field); Rajan Rayamajhi, Ramesh Budathoki, Nirajan Rayamajhi, Rajkumar Shrestha, Bill Tamang (forward).

Likewise, a total of 20 players have been included in various athletic events for the 9th SAF Games, according to the final selection result of the Nepal Amateur Athletics Association.

The final selection was carried out by the committee constituting chief coach Narayan Yadav,coaches Nara Bahadur Shahi, Pushpa Raj Ojha, Sushil Narasingh Rana, Chandra Gurung and Tika Sedhai.

Among the notable absentees in the 9th SAF Games athletics contingent will be the 8th SAF Games 5,000m silver medallist Gyan Bahadur Bohara.

In the event’s final selection held last Friday, Bohara, who created the new national record—14:34.00sec at the Sydney Olympics, could only cross the line at 15:04.86sec and finished the race behind his teammate from Tribhuvan Club Narayan Chand who clocked 15:04.46sec. Bohara won the silver medal in the 8th SAF Games with the timing of 14:50.00sec.

According to the selection criteria, notwithstanding marathon and relay events, the final selection was limited to only those winning their respective events.

Madan Raj Giri is the another big name missing from the final list. Giri, who has just competed in 3,000m steeplechase at the IAAF World Athletics Championship could only finish the race at 9min 46sec, 19 seconds behind his fellow Tribhuvan Club runner Rajendra Bhandari.

Men’s 100m-Ramkrishna Chaudhary (10.70sec), 200m-Lila Shrestha (22.24sec), 400m-Asharam Chaudhary (48.54sec),Devi Bahadur Basnet (49.30sec), Prem Mahat (49.64sec)for 4x400m relay,800m Hutch Bahadur Chhetri (1:55.82sec),1,500m-Puran Singh Dhami (4:00.44sec), 5,000m-Narayan Chand (15:04.46 sec),Marathon-Yam Bahadur Pudasaini and Arjun Basnet,Triple jump-Sitaram Chaudhary (14.66meters), Javelin throw-Khursid Ahmad Khan (59.40meters).

Women’s 100m & 200m-Devi Maya Paneru (12.70sec & 25.12sec),400m Sabitri Nepal (1:01.48sec).
