Maoists warned to halt harmful activities

KATHMANDU, Sept 7 - Home Minister, Khum Bahadur Khadka has finally stepped up with rigorous warning that the government will never stay tight handed if the Maoist -affiliated sister organizations don’t stop their activities like extortion, intimidation and terrorism that cause social unrest.

At the time when the government has come down with liberal attitudes towards the rebels to solve the six years’ old insurgency, the Maoists on the other hand, have intensified their activities across the country," he said at an interaction programme, organized by Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce (FNCCI) in the capital today. He also informed that the government has adopted some specific strategies and will implement them soon to improve the present law and order situation.

He said that people from different quarters have started raising numerous questions over government’s patience and warned that the government is about to break its patience pent-up for long.

The law and order situation of the country has deteriorated after the rebels activities that have left no part untouched with. Speaking at the programme Khadka said that the government taking the proposed September 21 meet of the rebels into serious consideration has already formed its strategies to abort it.

Minister Khadka said that Maoists should not take the present liberal attitude of the government as its weakness. "The government has come with the liberal vision just in an effort to solve the problem peacefully," he said.

He also informed the gathering that the government has started taking necessary measures to curb the illegal activities of the Maoist- affiliated sister organizations.

"I have ordered police to crack down such activities and the government is determined to take strongest action against those engaged in such activities," he said.

Speaking at the same programme, Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat assured the business community that the situation will be back to normalcy soon. "Even though the present situation is terrific and uncertain, business community should take patience as such situation will not go last, " Mahat said.

He also said that since such terrifying activities have affected the entire national economy, it is not a problem related only with the business community and assured them that the government is fully with them.

"The present activities of the Maoists have put unnecessary obstacles in the ongoing process of economic development resulting the increment in poverty and unemployment," he said.

Industrialists and businessmen, at the program, complained that the various activities of the Maoists have forced them to shut down the industries jeopardizing billions of rupees of industrial investment.

Rabi Bhakta Shrestha, President of the FNCCI said that the entire businessmen and industrialists have been deeply frustrated due to the compounding anarchic and terrifying situation of the country. "The continuously deteriorating investment of the country has greatly heightened the possibility of huge capital flight,’ he warned.

He also expressed his dissatisfaction over failure of the government to provide necessary security to the industrialists even after levying one per cent security fee.

He urged the government to take concrete measures to check the rapidly shrinking investment environment.
