Brookfield, Galaxy in final

KATHMANDU, Sept 14 - The host Brookfield Academy and Galaxy Higher Secondary School set up title clash in the 2nd Inter-HS basketball tournament following their win over Malpi International School and Gyanodaya School respectively ,here on Friday.

In the second semifinal, Brookfield Academy registered a thrilling win over Malpi 51-45 in extra time as the teams were tied at 41-41 in the regulation time. Backed by the huge home crowed, Brookfield boys put on 10 points in added five minutes, while Malpi could only gather four points. Prem Sundar and Sanjay made useful contribution with 19 and 16 points respectively for the host while Arpan and Rabi scored 18 and 17 points respectively for the losing team.

Earlier, Galaxy overpowered Gyanodaya 57-43. Galaxy School’s Sujan and Nagesh scored 18 and 16 points to drive their teams in the final. The final will be staged on Sunday.


Taekwondo team leave for Thailand

KATHMANDU (PR) – The 15-member taekwondo squad for the upcoming 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games, left for Thai capital Bangkok on Friday for away training.

The National Sports Council (NSC) said in its press release issued today that the taekwondo team will undergo training there for 18 days.

Deputy chef de mission for the 9th SAF Games – Dawa Gurung bade farewell to the team which includes: Siol Aei Riyo, Nanda Kumar Rai, Pramila Thapa Magar and Sapana Malla (coach); Parag Das Gorkhali, Kumar Bahadur Karki, Koshis Khadka, Deepak Bista, Kamal Chettri, Ramji Prasad Dahal, Saki Mahato Tharu and Govinda Prasad Sharma (men); Sangina Vaidya, Seeta Rai and Renuka Magar (women).


Gyanodaya’s double delight

LALITPUR, Sept 14 – Geetanjali School cruised into the semi-finals of ANFA Cup U-14 Youth Football Championship defeating SOS Herman Gmeiner 3-2 on tie-breaker at the Jawalakhel football ground here Friday.

The match entered the penalty shoot-out as both the teams failed to break the 1-1 deadlock in the regulation and extra time. Mahendra Roka, Sujan Dangol and Bijay Gurung successfully converted their spot kicks into goals for Geetanjali side while SOS team suffered the letdown as only Sunil Simkhada and Anil Tamrakar buried their shots into the net.

Both the teams showed a lot of courage in the match only not to find the net in the first session. In the 42nd minute, SOS moved 1-0 up through Anil Tamrakar. But Prabal Man brought Geetanjali back at level terms in the 54th minute. However neither team could make headway thereafter despite several opportunities.

Earlier on, Gyanodaya School (Blue) completed a 7-1 demolition of Future Star School as Swayan Limbu struck twice for the Gyanodaya.

In the match dominated by Gyanodaya, Anil Rai, Bikas Pun, Akbar Thapa, BM Kuttu and Firoj Thapa were all among goals. For the Future Star Side, Abu Walker pulled a face saving consolation goal. Gyanodaya School (Red) emulated their Blue teammates registering a 7-0 thumping of Learning Realm School (LRI) in the day’s other match.

Gyanodaya’s emphatic win was centered on fabulous performances from Yunik Shrestha and Gyanendra Ale. Shrestha accounted for four goals while Ale struck a hattrick.
