Second ATB Championship from Sept 24

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Sept 22 – The Second Amrit Trophy Basketball (ATB) Championship will start from September 24, announced the organisers in a press conference on Saturday.

The championship will feature a total of 21 teams, pooled in four groups. Each team will have to play one match each against every other group member. Two top teams of the pool are slated to advance to the quarter-final round.

The semi-finals and final of the tournament, unlike the league round, will be played as best-of-three games, says the press release issued on the occasion.

The organisers also said that the plans were on to start a professional basketball league. Starting from this year’s tournament, eight quarter-finalist teams would be ranked as the first division clubs, while the rest of the teams dubbed as the second division ones. The first division teams will be eligible for a direct entry in the 3rd ATB championship.

In the third essay, two top teams from the second division and two teams from outside the valley would be allowed to play in the tournament—apart from the eight first division clubs—reducing the number of participating teams to 12 from the present 21.

All the semi-finalist teams will be awarded Rs 5000 each by virtue of entry into the final four. The winners of the championship will be awarded an extra cash prize of Rs 10000, apart from the trophy and certificates while the runners-up team will receive Rs 5000.

The best rebounder (defender) and the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament will also be awarded Rs 5000 each.

Last year, Lincoln School had emerged as the winner in the 15-team competition.

The teams for the 2nd ATB Championship:

Pool A: Lincoln School, Nepal Commerce Campus, Myagdi team, Ashirwad College, Galkopakha Youth Club and Knights Club.

Pool B: Gyanodaya, Public Youth Campus, Tri-Chandra Campus, Ascol Juniors, and Ranjana Cassette Center.

Pool C: Unique A team, SOS, Kathmandu University, 10’ERS and Shanti Chhetra Club.
