Scepter of terrorism
September 11, 2001 will perhaps be remembered
as a day of shame, because of the heinous crime on humanity perpetrated through the brutal
and insensible attack at the World Trade Centre, which is beyond decent human behaviour by
any standard. This will perhaps also be remembered as a day which, finally prompted
humanity to rise against the scepter of global terrorism. It can only be hoped that
humanity and the sense of decent human values will succeed in eradicating this scourge
from the face of the earth.
Nepal, once peaceful land, has also had its
share of discord for the last six years, as a product of inaptitude and obstinacy of our
political "so called" democratic leaders sans democratic values and culture.
Opportunities granted by the people have been squandered by our leaders in fulfilling
their personal gains rather than to live up to the aspirations of the people. Democracy,
perceived by our leaders as their rights more than responsibilities, has succeeded in
giving it bad killings of one Nepali brother by another brother. Though some sense seems
to have prevailed and efforts have started to normalize the situation through talks,
killings have abated for the last few weeks. While the government has made concessions and
has shown magnanimity, which borders to impotency, the other side still exhibits duplicity
because of their continuous terror tactics through reported threats, exhortions,
man-handlings, arsons and unlawful activities. The scepter of terrorism still hangs on the
psyche of the Nepali public. Enough is enough and it needs to be brought to an end.
Is it too much to expect from our so called
political leaders of today's democratic Nepal to be a Nepali first and think of Nepal than
of some "ism" or anything else and put in more honest and sincere effort or
whatever is necessary to restore the peace and tranquillity that had been a hallmark of
this land of Buddha?
