Anamnagar-Ghattekulo area to be improved

Post Report

KATHMANDU, April 2:The uncontrolled and unmanaged mushrooming of concrete houses of Anamnagar-Ghattekulo area that has scarcely left open space or roads, is coming under control as the locals are taking steps to upgrade the land with the technical help from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

"We are planning to improve the 20 hectares of land in the newly developing residential area of ward No. 32 to control the haphazard development and make use of some open space," said infrastructure engineer Anup Johsi of Kathmandu Valley Mapping Pragramme, a project of KMC.

In the past ten years or so, over a hundred houses have been built on the eastern side of Dhobikhola but the new residents hardly think about open space, emergency outlets, way for fire-brigade and ambulances while constructing their houses. The result is that the roads are uneven, meandering and no space for children to play or parking vehicles.

The experts said that the whole area would be dangerous to reside in if minimum of infrastructure is not developed there in time.

"As the area is growing independently, without any governing body to control it, we concluded that the residents of the area would face lots of practical problems if the number of houses keep growing in the same way and the owners of new houses do not realise the need of land improvement plans in time."

The project will broaden all the roads that are important for local transportation. It will open all the bottlenecks as far as possible by acquiring the private land and paying off due compensation. It will also improve the drainage system and construct new drains. For those activities, a steering committee has been formed that includes the participation of local people in development works.

A meeting of the committee is being held on Tuesday, the KMC officials said.

"The whole project will be conducted with the financial contribution from the locals and the KMC which will provide certain amount of money to launch the preliminary development works," Joshi said.

He said after the completion of the project, the land value of the area would increase and the residents there also would get better facility. However, the total amount to complete the project has not been estimated.
