Post Report

KATHMANDU, April 12 : Kathmandu district started the Regional Cricket Selection tournament promisingly with a convincing 9-wicket win over Tribhuvan University (TU) in a match played at Tribhuvan University cricket ground on Friday.

TU won the toss and elected to bat but their batsmen could not cope with the experienced bowling attack of Kathmandu. A total of six Nepali internationals are playing from Kathmandu side. Aided by Sudhir Pandey’s 23 off 60 balls and Niraj Basnet 12 runs TU managed lowly 70 runs in 35.3 overs – 4.3 overs short of the allotted 40 overs.

Paceman Pramod Basnet picked up two early wickets while Raju Basnet was the pick of Kathmandu bowlers with three wickets in five overs. Bardan Chalise and Kiran Rana clinched two wickets each.

Chasing the lowly target, Kathmandu won the match in just 11.5 overs. Opening batsman Paresh Lohani remained unbeaten with 37 runs off 49 balls. Lohani finished the match in style hitting a huge straight sixer in the 5th ball off left arm spinner Yug Basnet’s 5th over. TU bowlers never looked comfortable against the solid batting of Lohani. Sandeep Shrestha remained unbeaten at 5.

Bhusan Panta claimed the wicket of Buddhi Ram Tamang for eight runs. Nripendra Bhattarai, member of Baluwatar Cricket Club (BCC), handed over the man-of-the-match award to Raju Basnet of Kathmandu. The tournament featuring five teams of the Central Region, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Nuwakot and TU, is organised jointly by BCC and Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).

Lalitpur will take on Bhaktapur in the second match at the same ground on Saturday.
