Government urged to resume
dialogue
Post Report
KATHMANDU, April 20:Writers and experts gathered
at a programme here today said that the resumption of dialogue is the only option left
before the government for a durable solution to the problems of Maoist insurgency in the
country.
Speaking at a programme on " the role of
intellectuals during the current situation and freedom of expression", organised by
the Progressive Writers Association of Nepal, a prominent writer, Khagendra
Sangraula said that the proposed constitutional amendment alone would not pave the way for
peace. He said that dialogue was imperative for a lasting solution.
Shyam Shrestha, Editor of Mulyankan said the
Maoist rebels are losing their moral support from the masses after they started destroying
infrastructure and public properties. "Government could take advantage of the
situation especially after the Maoists started destroying infrastructure and public
property losing moral support from the masses. The government should take advantage of the
situation and isolate them, forcing them to lay down arms," he said.
Mod Nath Prashrit, another prominent writer and
CPN-UML member said Prime Minister Deubas attempt at solving the Maoist crisis
through constitutional amendment would be futile and time- consuming. He suggested, if the
Maoists wanted to go ahead with guns and bloodshed in realising their political goals, it
was time that all the people carry guns and fight them to the finish. If they had not
wished so, they must come to the negotiating table, he added.
Nilu Chapagai, President of the Progressive
Writers Association of Nepal urged the government to return to dialogue with Maoists
to save the situation from exploding into a bigger crisis.
Nar Hari Acharya, NC Central Committee member
and Jhalanath Khanal of CPN-UML were also present at the programme attended by various
writers.
