Thapa clinches squash title

KATHMANDU, Dec 27 : Top-seeded Hira Bahadur Thapa clinched the title of the Birthday Cup Squash tournament registering win over second seeded Suresh Gurung on Friday.

Thapa had also beaten Gurung in the final of the King’s Birthday Cup in July. Satya Narayan Shrestha managed the third place of the men’s open category. All the finals of the weeklong tournament completed on Friday.

In veteran’s category, Bhusan Krishna Shrestha downed Deepak Bohara in the final to bag the title. Madhuban Lal Maskey was placed third. Janak Thapa won the title of men’s open plate championship beating Subodh Pradhan. Hiranyalal Shrestha claimed the third position. Likewise, Anil Singh claimed the masters’ category while Sunil Pradhan and Bir Bahadur Nepal were placed second and third respectively.

The Royal Nepal Army chief Pyara Jung Thapa gave away the shield and certificates to the winners.

Table Tennis

Deep Saud defeated Ajay Suwal in an all Holyland final to claim the boys’ U-16 title of the table tennis tournament. Suresh Awale and Sandesh Awale, who were beaten by the two finalists, bagged the third position.

In men’s open final staged later, Chandan Shahi downed Shiva Sundar Gothe. Purushottam Bajracharya and Ajaya Suwal managed the third position jointly. The students of Ganesh Memorial demonstrated cultural programme after the matches. Minister for Information, Communication and General Administration Ramesh Nath Pandey handed over the trophies and certificates to the winners. The Minister of Education and Sports Devi Prasad Ojha and National Sports Council (NSC) member-secretary Binod Shankar Palikhe were also present at the programme.

The Birthday Cup cross-country race and karate championship starts from Saturday.
