Bataju guides Galaxy to victory

KATHMANDU, Dec 28 : Galaxy Public School beat Brihaspati Vidya Sadan (BVS) by 49 runs in the opening match of the Prince Birthday Cup Inter-school Cricket tournament organised by Cricket Association of Nepal on Saturday.

Bantu Bataju, the key member of Nepal’s U-15 recent tour of United Arab Emirates, fashioned Galaxian win picking five wickets and smashing 40 runs off 42 deliveries. Galaxy won the toss and opted to bat first making 135 runs in 29.5 overs -a ball short of the allotted 30 overs. Apart from Bataju, Kaniska Chaugain also chipped in brisk 24 runs off 19 balls. Ashish Raj Pandey was the lone BVS batsman to defy Galaxian attack making 24 runs as no other batsmen stayed longer at the crease. BVS made 82 runs in 27.2 overs.

Besides Bataju, Raj Swar and Chaugain also bagged two wickets apiece while Avay Satyal shone from BVS bagging three wickets. Sovit Chand, Bibhav Panti and Lakpa Sherpa claimed two wickets apiece for BVS. Bataju was declared man of the match.

Karate

The Birthday Cup Shinzen Karate Championship concluded Saturday at the National Sports Council (NSC) Covered Hall.

Rajkumar Rasaili bagged the first position in men’s 50kg weight category contest beating Binod Thapa in the final. Punyaraj Bajracharya bagged the third position in that category. Likewise, Rajendra Subedi won the 60kg title defeating Pradip Nakarmi. Asok Kumar Rokka secured the third position of 60kg category.

In open weight category, Surya Amatya managed the first spot beating Siddhartha Silwal in the final. Prem Bahadur Gurung secured the third position. Dan Bahadur Ghising was adjudged best fighter of the tournament while Binod Thapa bagged the technical-fighter award. Former marathoner Baikuntha Manadhar gave away the medals and certificates to the winners.

Taekwondo

The Birthday Cup Taekwondo Championship organised by Nepal Taekwondo Association kicked off Saturday at Satdobato’s Taekwondo Association’s Hall.

A total of 57 men and 25 women taikas from 13 dozangs around the valley are competing at the tournament for eight category of which five are for men and three are for women. NSC member-secretary Binod Shankar Palikhe inaugurated the championship amid a programme earlier on Saturday.
