Patna down RCT 3-1

BIRGUNJ, Feb 11: Rajmilk Patna’s Nigerian striker John Andrew struck twice to stage a 3-1 win over Rani Pokhari Corner Team (RCT) in the second match of the Amatya Gold Cup Football tournament played at the local Narayani Stadium on Monday.

The visitors scored uncredible three goals within the space of 11 minutes to advance to the next round as they trailed by 1-0 in the 23rd minute. In-form footballer Raj Kumar Shrestha gave RCT 1-0 up when he buried a powerful shot inside Rajmilk net.

RCT looked like winner with just 11 minutes remaining and one goal up but another Nigerian striker Suleman Olakule found the equaliser in the 79th minute causing a huge disappointed for the local spectators. Six minutes later, the match took a sensational turn when Andrew received a beautiful release from Olakule and headed home a goal taking the visitors on the driving seat.

When RCT players were trying hard to equalise, referee Shyam Lama gave marching orders to RCT’s Ramesh Gyawali in the 86th minute for committing a ferocious looking back tackle. Adding insult to RCT wound, Olakule netted his second and team’s third against the 10-man RCT in the 88th minute to seal a stunning 3-1 victory.

Later, ANFA president Geeta Rana handed the man of the match award to Olakule for his brilliant two goals.

The titleholders of Nirajan Memorial tournament Eastern Railways Kolkata face off Galaxian Club on Tuesday.
