Hosts celebrate triple joy

KATHMANDU, Feb 27 : Gyanodaya School’s senior boys made a promising start to their campaign in the fourth Wilson Inter-school basketball tournament with a 52-48 win over Galaxy School in the closely contested match played on Wednesday.

In what turned out to be a sensational match, Gyanodaya boys demonstrated a superb pick-and-roll to check the strong Galaxians throughout.

Galaxians looked sharp for a while in the third quarter but Gyanodaya, aided by sublime skills of captain Shyam Limbu, bounced back in the fourth quarter to seal a crushing victory.

Earlier, Druba Sherchan opened the scoring for Gyanodaya and captain Limbu followed him with a three-pointer to start the first quarter with flyer. They managed four points’ lead in the first quarter scoring 14 against Galaxian 10 points.

Gyanodaya maintained the lead in the second quarter adding 16 points to lead Galaxian by eight points as the later could only collect 12 points.

Manoj Sherchan scored three consecutive nets in the third quarter to put Galaxian in the lead for the first time in the match. Sherchan topscored with 26 points. The third quarter of the match that saw several ups and downs tilted towards Galaxian’s way as they were comfortably placed at 41-37.

Limbu found three nets in the fourth quarter to wrap up the battle 52-48. At one stage the Galaxian were at 45-46 with just a minute remaining off the match.

For Gyanodaya School, Limbu and Diwas Mayor scored 17 points each. Gyanodaya, now, will face Daffodil School on Thursday in their second match.

Earlier, aided by a huge boost of the home crowd and Amit Tulachan’s brilliant 23 points, the hosts Wilson Academy demolished KISC 71-31. Kajesh Mool also provided a handy support with 17 points. Aparampar Gurung of the losing side netted 19 points.

In other match of the same category, Bimal Gurung’s 10 points helped Alpha’s to break the heart of Young Heart with 46-23 win. In the day’s only boys’ junior clash, The Excelsior beat Ideal English 28-15, which featured 10 points each from Tenzing Norbu and Star Limu for the winning side.

The hosts made it double joy when they scored 19-2 humiliation over Gillette School in the senior girl’s category. Kavita Chaulagai, taking maximum advantage of her height, scored nine points for the home side. In day’s last staff match, Wilson again stamped their authority with a 62-51 win over Gillette School. For Wilson, Prakash Sharma topscored with 22 points.
