SAARC Peoples’ Forum meets

KATHMANDU, Jan 3:The different peoples from the SAARC region met today in the second SAARC Peoples’ Forum to seek the SAARC delegates hold discussions on the security of livelihood, freedom of movement and the security against human trafficking here today.

The decision of the meeting and the "Mukti-Paani" declaration will be submitted to the Office of the SAARC Secretariat tomorrow where the delegates will have discussions on the issues, said one of the speakers at the meeting.

The purpose of convening SAARC Peoples’ Forum is to facilitate formation of a common regional voice and to influence government policies in the SAARC countries, Sandhaya Shrestha, programme co-odinator at OXFAM said.

This forum was established by two networks, the South Asia Network on Food, Ecology and Culture (SAFEC) and South Asian Network to Resist Trafficking in Women and Children in order to overcome the problems of poverty, food insecurity and insecurity of livelihood of the common people, as women and children are more vulnerable to various forms of violence including trafficking.

The forum has also urged the SAARC governments to see to the critical connection subsisting between the food security at the household level as primary measure to lessen the vulnerability of women and children in falling prey to the trafficking mafia.

Five participants from Bangladesh, different participants from NGOs, INGOs and representatives from Nepal were present at the conference. The programme was organised by SAFEC, National Alliance for Food Security (NAFOS) and Alliance Against Trafficking in Women And Children (AATWIN).
