NSC bids farewell to Nepal U-19 team

KATHMANDU, Jan 10: The Nepali Under-19 Youth World Cup squad was given a farewell by the National Sports Council (NSC) amid a function held at its premises on Thursday. The Youth World Cup starts in New Zealand from January 14 to February 9.

Nepal qualified for the 16-team Youth World Cup as the winners of Youth Asia Cup 2001 that was held in Kathmandu last October. Earlier, Nepal had participated in the Youth World Cup 1999 in Sri Lanka.

The 14-member Nepali Under-19 squad is led by Binod Das. Roy Dias, former Sri Lankan Test cricketer is the coach of the side with Samson Jung Thapa as his deputy. The team will leave for New Zealand on Saturday.

Nepal are pitted in Group C against former champions England, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea. They will play two preparatory matches before taking on England on January 21.

Shakti Gauchan, member of the Nepali team in Youth Asia Cup was awarded with a cricket bat by Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) for his century against the Maldives in the cup.

Minister for Education and Sports and chairman of NSC, Amod Prasad Upadhyaya, NSC member-secretary Binod Shanker Palikhe were present at the occasion along with the office-bearers of CAN.

Binod Das (captain), Bardan Chalise (vice-captain), Kanishka Chaugain, Yashwant Subedi, Shakti Gauchan, Basudev Thapa, Manjit Shrestha, Lakpa Lama, Sanjam Regmi, Pramod Basnet, Manoj Katuwal, Prem Chaudhary, Basant Regmi and Rohit Sharma.
