Surkhet jail
This refers to a new story titled "Thirty prisoners flee
from Surkhet jail" dated January 17, 2002, TKP. The jail is located in the suburb of
Surkhet which is 1600 meters away from the town. There had been hardly any police
patrolling. But at such a jail the government had housed twenty hard core Maoists who
managed to escape that too during broad day light. The prisoners dug a tunnel which must
have taken them at least a month. Yet, the police personnel knew nothing about their
activities. This is an example how our police personnel maintain law and order in this
country.
The government must admit that there was a serious security
lapse and local police were having their field days before these prisoners escaped. Now,
what action is the government going to take against the authority concerned? To set up a
commission is not a big deal, nor will this commission prevent such incidents in future.
The commission will find an excuse to defy the security lapse at the Surkhet jail. But who
should look into the report that soon be prepared to protect culprits and undermine laws?
Police or politicians?
