Clarification
The news item related to the election of local
bodies, published on January 22, 2002 in your front page, has drawn the attention of the
Election Commission. As the facts mentioned in the news report were somewhat misleading,
we would like to make some clarifications.
With regard to the election of local bodies,
there is a legal provision under which His Majestys Government (HMG) informs the
Election Commission by publishing a notice to this effect and the commission then holds
the election accordingly. Therefore, as it is HMG that should inform the commission in
this regard, it is not necessary for the Commission to correspond with HMG.
The date for holding local elections is not
fixed by His Majestys Government. We wish to clarify that the period for completing
the election is determined by the Local Bodies (Election Procedure) Act and the current
laws of the country. There is a provision under which the election programme and the date
for polling will be as fixed by the Commission.
