Tribhuvan Club triumph at 3rd National Workers’ Cup Volleyball

Post Report

BHAKTAPUR, Jan 29:Tribhuvan Club overcame a stiff challenge of Jawalakhel Youth Club to lift the third National Workers’ Cup Volleyball Championship on Tuesday.

Much to the delight of strong crowd who flocked into the local Sahid ground, the final went to the wire as both Tribhuvan Club and Jawalakhel Youth Club (JYC) put in last drop of their efforts in the match.

It was JYC, who with big smashes early on, landed a string of points at closing moments to take the opening game 25-21. They were perfectly poised to double the lead but Tribhuvan Club combined their efforts together just in the nick of time and leveled the match at 1-1, winning the second game on 27-25.

The Army outfit, producing strong services attacked from the outset of third game to move 2-1 up, winning it at 25-16. With just a game away from clinching the title, the Army were desperate to close it quickly. But Jawalakhel had other idea. Inspired by Ravi Bogati, who would be declared the best player of the tournament later, not only did they deny points to the opposition but crawled their way back to even the score by taking the game at 25-22.

However, Tribhuvan Club, shrugged off the fourth-game setback to anchor the deciding game at 15-10 to lift the championship.

Tribhuvan Club, besides receiving the winners’ trophy, also became richer by Rs 12,000. There were more laurels to the Army camp as Pashupati Chaudhary, Raj Kumar Chhetri and Ram Chandra Kumal walked away with awards for the tournament’s best spiker, best setter and best blocker respectively.

Chief guest of the occasion, president of Nepal Workers and Peasants Party and member of parliament Narayan Man Bijukchhen distributed trophies, cash prizes, medals and certificates to the teams and players amid a function held after the final.

Jawalakhel received the runners-up trophy and a cheque for Rs 6,000 while Galaxian Club who finished at third collected Rs 3,000.

Earlier, the third place play-off between Galaxian Club and Kaski District Volleyball Association had progressed along in similar line as the final.

Galaxian Club, with the galaxy of national volleyball stars, moved 1-0 up with a 25-20 victory in the opening game. But Kaski were quick to prove that their journey to the last four was not a coincidence as they took the second at 25-15.

While the teams pushed hard for each point, fortune hardly stuck to one side for too long which provided the crowd a seat-edge excitement throughout. Galaxians regained lead by taking third at 25-19 but conceded the following at 12-25 in front of Kaski brilliance.

There was everything to play for in the last and deciding set and Galaxian Club exploited their experience to squeeze out a 15-13 win at the end.
