Tamang stars in Galaxian win

Post Report

BIRATNAGAR, Jan 30 The Nirajan Memorial Invitational Football tournament kicked off at the local Sahid Stadium on Wednesday with Surendra Tamang guiding Galaxian Club to a 3-1 win over visiting Kurseong XI in the opening match.

The Galaxians, repeating their form of Birendra Memorial football tournament, once again showed a brilliant coordination at the front. They put the opposition under pressure from the outset and were soon rewarded.

In the 8th minute, Ganesh Limbu released a well-executed pass to unmarked Tamang, who wasted no time to unleash a powerful shot that kissed the opposition’s net to give Galaxian Club a 1-0 lead. Prior to that, Limbu had a close look at the goal two minutes into the match but his powerful leftfooter failed to beat Kurseong XI goalkeeper Rajiv Lakhandri.

In the 28th minute, Kurseong, exploiting a rare opportunity brought themselves back into match as Uday Rai netted an equaliser. Rai, putting his individual brilliance at display, dribbled past four Galaxian defenders and comprehensively beat goalie Ritesh Thapa to slot home the ball.

The goal was the result of three comprehensive moves within 10 minutes by the visitors.

After much of seesaw battle, Galaxian surged ahead to 2-1 lead through Tamang’s goal three minutes before the break. It was Tamang’s counterpart Ritesh Khadka whose clever pass from the edge of 18-yard area was brilliantly exploited by Tamang.

The late first half lead proved costly for the visitors as they never recovered thereafter. With a considerable slow down in the match, there were only sporadic moves from either side in the second session. But Galaxians maintained their domination over Kurseong XI. And Galaxians added one more to their
tally two minute from time to complete a 3-1 win. Tamang, once again fed by a brilliant pass from Khadka scored his hattrick. He was adjudged man of the match after the match.

Earlier, Minister for Education and Sports Amod Prasad Upadhyaya declared the tournament open amid a function.

On Thursday, Three Star Club take on ‘A’ division rivals Rani Pokhari Corner Team (RCT).
