Chaudhary stars in Mahabir’s win

Post Report

KATHMANDU, March 3 : A speedy unbeaten century from Dipendra Chaudhary powered Mahabir Cricket Club (MCC) to an emphatic 131-run win over Parsa Cricket Association Sunday in the second match of the Ganesh Man Memorial Cricket tournament.

With the win, Mahabir have secured their berth in the tournament’s quarterfinals.

Mahabir, who decided to bat first after winning the toss in the rain-reduced match, were reduced to 21-2. But Chaudhary, together with opener Prafulla Vaidya, tore apart the Parsa attack to raise their total to challenging 198-2 from the allotted 25 overs.

While Vaidya (32 not out) played an anchor role, Chaudhary brilliantly shouldered the run-making responsibility as the two shared an unending 177-run partnership for the third wicket. Chaudhary hit 6 sixes and 11 boundaries on the road to his blistering 132 runs. He was more severe on Rajiv Shrestha and Sudip Poudyal, who went for 44 and 50 runs respectively off their five overs.

Earlier, Parsa, who had crushed Baneshwor Cricket Club by 147 runs in the tournament’s opening match, made a promising start to separate the Mahabir openers with the team total reading only 12. Paresh Lohani (6) was first to go when Nawab Ahmad bowled him in the last delivery of his second over.

Sandip Shrestha, who replaced Lohani, did not stay at the crease for too long either. His innings lasted for only five balls. He hit two consecutive fours off the bowling of Rajiv Shrestha but fell to the same bowler in the same over.

Much was expected of Parsa, especially after Saturday’s comprehensive victory, when they stepped in to chase the target of 199. The openers Kalamuddin Ansari and Pratab Maharjan (13) put on 33 runs but once Kalam Ali forced the latter to hole a catch to Lohani the Parsa innings started to disintegrate.

Ansari dogged on to his crease while wickets fell at the other end on regular interval. Parsa lost their second wicket after adding only six runs to the total when Kiman Ojha fell short of his ground on a sharp throw from Sanjib.

Apart from Pramod Basnet, who conceded 15 runs off two overs, rest of the bowlers bowled superbly to keep Parsa batsmen on hook. And shortly after Ansari, the team’s top-scorer with 29, was caught by Sandip Shrestha off the bowling of Manish Lohani, Parsa were bowled out for a mere 67 runs in 17.2 overs.

Chaudhary was declared man of the match for his match-winning knock. Free Students Union, Tribhuvan University take on Baluwatar Cricket Club on Monday.
