Road
accidents
People are being killed
not only in the Maoist violence, but also in bus accidents that have
become too frequent in our country these days. The very thought of
having to make a long journey makes one shudder with the fear of a
possible accident.
Road accidents are on the
rise of late. At least three accidents took place in a week, two of
them major ones, killing a dozen and nine people. In one accident, it
was reported that the bus incolved was very old. This might be the
case in some of the other accidents too. Why can’t the authorities
concerned make a routine check of vehicles and drivers to ensure
safety ? It is high time they banned outdated vehicles that have
proved to be hazardous to public safety.
The government’s
much-talked about plan to ban old vehicles from plying on the roads
was in the public interest, although it was opposed by the owners of
those vehicles. This was a timely move of the government. The owners,
however, want to continue running such vehicles at the cost of
people’s lives. They have earned enough money from such vehicles for
quite a long time. Now the government must ban all such old vehicles.
