26 rebels, one suspect killed in operations

KATHMANDU, March 9 : At least 26 rebels and one suspect were
shot dead by security forces at various parts of the nation during the last 24 hours.
A press release issued today by the Defence Ministry said 10
rebels including one suspect were killed in several incidents in various districts.
Another 15 rebels were shot dead in an encounter in Banke district, our reporter said
quoting the Chief District Officer (CDO) of Banke. Two other Maoists were killed in
Nuwakot district in the search operation after 20 security personnel were injured in an
ambush.
The security forces killed 15 Maoists, including a prominent
leader and a bomb-maker, in Dhakeri of Mahadevpuri Village Development Committee (VDC) of
Banke district, according to Bal Krishna Prasai, the Chief District Officer (CDO).
The CDO confirmed the death of acting district secretary of
Maoist Dambar Ranabhat alias Anup, explosive technician from Jajarkot Rabindra, Mahendra
Rokaya alias Binod, Sithil and Demanti Pun alias Kopila. The others are yet to be
identified. "They were killed in encounters on Friday and Saturday," said
Prasai.
The Defence Ministry statement said that security forces
killed four Maoists in Harikatina of Rolpa district and four others, including a woman,
were killed in Khorsani of Kerabari in Morang district in encounters. Security forces also
gunned down a Maoist in Lekhkharka of Sindhuli district.
An unidentified person was killed in Kaski district when the
Royal Nepal Army (RNA) personnel fired on suspects trying to enter the perimeter of army
barrack despite repeated warnings, according to the statement. Another person was injured
in a similar incident in Nuwakot. The injured has been admitted to the Chautara Hospital
and RNA is investigating into both the events, said the release.
Our reporter from Chautara said the injured was identified as
Sanu Kaji Karki, 22, of Syaule-9 and has been brought to Bir Hospital immediately after
the incident. The allegedly mentally disordered Karki works as a porter.
Our reporter of Nuwakot district, Dinesh Regmi, said that 20
security personnel 15 policeman and 5 army were injured when their vehicle
was trapped in an ambush in Barbote of Ganeshthan-4, 10 km east of headquarters Bidur on
Saturday. They were returning from the search operation, according to Ratna Kaji Gubhaju,
a police inspector In District Police Office.
The security forces conducted a massive search operation
after the incident and gunned down two Maoists, said Gubhaju.
The security forces also seized guns in Sindhuli, Pyuthan and
Memeng of Paanchthar and explosives in Rolpa. The security forces also distributed a large
quantity of food grains that were seized from the rebels in Haatpate of Sindhuli to the
locals, according to the release.
The release also stated that ex-Indian Gurkha army Ram
Bahadur Singh Thakuri of Banagau of Salbariya-1 of Dang district was brutally killed by
the Maoist in the wee hour of Friday night.
Our reporter of Dang district, K. P. Ghimire, said that the
Maoists also looted a radio set, a watch and 22,000 rupees in cash from the house of a
resident, Thakuri. Thakuri died after half an hour of the Maoist attack, said Om Prakash
Singh Thakuri, the eldest son of the victim.
The Maoist used sticks, stones and fire wood to beat Thakuri
brutally, according to Om Prakash. The youngest son of Thakuri, Krishna Jung Singh
Thakuri, is a constable of Armed Police Force.
The Maoist also bombed a house of a civilian in
Tribhuwannagar Municipality-3 of Dang district. A group of 25-30 Maoists bombed Shekhar
Sharmas house on Friday, according to our reporter. The 3-storey house was empty
during the incident. The bombing destroyed the southern half of the house.
Meanwhile, our reporter from Bardia district reported that
Maoists kidnapped a policeman from Area Police Office of Rajapur. Prakash Dahit Chaudhary
was kidnapped when he was returning to the office from his home in Jodhipur of Nayagaon
VDC, according to police.
