East West lift Ganesh Man Memorial trophy

Post Report

KATHMANDU, March 13 East West Cricket Club (EWCC) bagged the Ganesh Man Singh Memorial Cricket tournament’s title defeating Youth Cricket Club (YCC), Biratnagar by 3-wicket in the final played at Tribhuvan University cricket ground on Wednesday.

The ensuing encounter had many twists and turns but eventually Biratnagar’s middle order collapse cost them dear. Biratnagar top orders batted well but seven wickets fell adding just 54 runs in the final session to leave their team to a moderate score of 195 in 39.1 overs.

Chasing the seemingly easy target, EWCC openers failed but a useful 76 runs partnership for the third wicket between Sailendra Katait and Bisal Razdan put a solid foundation for EWCC middle-orders who reached the target in 37.2 overs losing just seven wickets.

The highlight of the day was EWCC left hander Singh’s brilliant half century powered with two towering sixers off left arm spinner Paras Luniya and Manish Vardan. Singh also grabbed two wickets while bowling.

Earlier, YCC skipper Luniya won the toss and elected to bat first at the batsmen friendly Kirtipur pitch. YCC opener Yashwant Subedi (19) and Maheboob Alam put on 88 runs for the first wicket but Bhagat Khari sent both the batsmen to the pavilion in quick succession to restore parity in the match.

Allrounder Alam topsocred with breezy 62 runs off 46 balls including two sixes and seven fours. First down Manish Vardan scored 43 while Manjeet Shrestha made 19 to put YCC at comfortable 140 for three in 27 overs. In the later part of the innings, Pramod Sharma bagged three wickets including skipper Paras Luniya and hard hitting Rajkumar Pradhan to wrap up YCC innings at 195.

"We were looking to score about 230-240 runs but our last seven batsmen went to pavilion in quick succession, which was frustrating in the final," skipper Luniya said after the match. "While defending the target, we committed some disastrous errors at the field to let the opponents get on top," Luniya added.

The Biratnagar cricketers conceded almost 20 over-throw runs and also missed three run out chances and dropped two easy catches. During their run-chase, EWCC captain Bisal Razdan (24) provided a good support to Singh before being run out and at the later part of the innings, Kundan Mehara chipped in with run a ball 40 runs and remained unbeaten till the end.

"I am very pleased with our boys’ performance," said ecstatic Razdan after the match. "Actually we peaked as a team today," he added.

From YCC side, skipper Luniya claimed three wickets while leg spinner Pradhan was awarded with a couple of wickets. Alam also clinched a wicket in his short spell.

Sailender Singh of the winning side was adjudged man of the match while Mehaboob Alam was declared the man-of-the-series. Likewise, Mahavir Cricket Club’s Dipendra Chaudhary received the best batsman award whereas Rajiv Shrestha of Parsa Cricket Club (PCC) became the best bowler of the tournament. Former Prime Minister Krishna Prashad Bhattrai, National Sports Council’s member-secretary Binod Shankar Palikhe and Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) president Jay Kumar Nath Shah handed over the trophy and certificates to the winner and runner-up teams.

The organisers Tarun Dal also felicitated the members of Nepali cricket team that participated in the Under-19 World Cup Cricket tournament held in New Zealand early this year.
