Change the curriculum

I read, ‘Donors to change school curricula’ (March 13, 2002, TKP). Surely the curricula play a key role in the country’s development. But the frequent changes, in the absence of solid achievement, or not following an ‘input’ and ‘output’ evaluation system, are more or less like our younger generation used as guinea pigs for experiments.

I am certain that Health and Physical Education (HPE) for SLC more practical lessons is more important than Social Studies. Similarly, Environment Science class is not needed. It requires more practical activities and the theory lessons which are analogous to Health Science or Social Studies can be included in them. Extra curricular activities and the vocational subjects are equally important.

Quality of education has been a catch-phrase of the authorities concerned for more than two decades but without precise meaning and criteria. Few have been chanting this jargon as magic wand to attract people. I understand the present concerned authority has planned to categorise private boarding schools. I think the categorisation process is farcical. It’s regrettable that corruption in education has taken an organised shape, particularly since the past two decades.
