Career options

The article entitled ‘More choices or confusion?’, written by Pooja Shrestha, published in your Midweek Post last Wednesday, does provide a good view of various career options available to the young generation these days. But are they really able to exercise these options? Only a few fortunate ones have been able to use the career options as per their inclinations and ability, while the careers of the majority of the educated youths are decided by their parents, or moulded by the social environment.

Our society still hasn’t woken up to the reality that economics, business, arts are just as respectable as medicine or engineering. The age old charm and attraction towards medicine and engineering hasn’t faded either. Many parents want their children to be doctors, engineers, managers and businessmen, but not teachers, lecturers, professors, researchers, artists, sportsmen, journalists, etc. I believe not many parents want their children to be politicians or journalists. Such an attitude and thinking still prevails in society. Unless and until, we correct such attitudes, I believe, our young generation won’t be able to fully utilise the career options available to them.
