Ayurveda and health

I agree fully that in a poor country like Nepal, there is a lot to be said about the contribution of Ayurveda to our health ("Ayurveda and the issue of integration" by Prof L M Singh and B Niranjan (Jan 30, 2003, TKP).

It can provide cheaper and effective health services because of its popularity. It is a pity if the official medical system does not pay enough attention to exploit this potential. Even in developed countries, alternative medicine has been gaining importance at present as modern medicine is not panacea to all diseases. Indeed, the usefulness of the Ayurvedic system has been well recognized in the treatment of nervous, respiratory, gastrointestinal systems and even some psychiatric disorders. In this Himalayan country with a rich herbal background, a lot of attention must be given to this system, if we are really serious to improve the health conditions in a cost-effective manner. It is time we, the medical doctors, should join hands with our Ayurvedic colleagues and not discourage them in our common crusade against ill health, disease and untimely deaths.
