Rebel students call off strikes

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Feb 5: In a major step forward to promote the atmosphere for peace dialogue with the government, the All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union (ANNISU) - Revolutionary today called off the indefinite strike aimed at paralysing the educational institutions across the country scheduled from February 13.

In a statement issued today, Devendra Parajuli, president of the ANNISU(R), said, "We decided to withdraw the indefinite strikes for the moment, so as to create a conducive environment for the on-going efforts for talks between the government and the CPN (Maoists) to resolve the greater problem of the nation."

The call for indefinite strikes in the name of radical reforms in the educational sector had forced many parents to send their children abroad while some schools were said to be contemplating closure of the schools.

The ANNISU(R) had closed down the educational institutions through out the Kathmandu Valley for about two weeks demanding the government to fulfil its 13-point demand, nearly two months ago.

The rebel students had also already given a call to chiefs of campuses to resign in support of the agenda fixed by the underground outfit’s student wing.

Many private and boarding schools had responded to the ANNISU(R)’s call by slashing their tuition fee but the rebel students said it was far from satisfied. Senior leaders of ANNISU(R) had reiterated, even after the truce was declared, that they would go ahead with the strike as planned earlier.
